The Min Min Lights, 2007 ~

Open-Air Improvised Recordings

The Min Min Lights is a project-based outfit consisting of Michael Fitzgerald on bass/guitar & Matt Leaf on guitar.

We met in 2001 and formed the band in 2007. The primary regime of The Min Min Lights is a focus on nocturnal, outdoor, improvised recordings.

Reflecting on and inviting the surrounding environment to influence our sound, we amalgamate a variety of styles with varying degrees of subtlety during each exploration and expedition. Within the current climate of portable recording equipment, the modern day artist is freed from the confines of the ‘recording studio’, both geo-spatially and conceptually.

The first EP release, Fireflies, was recorded in the rainforests of the Dharug and Dorrigo National Parks in New South Wales, and was released at the end of 2007 in limited edition CDR.

In 2010, Fireflies was re-released in a downloadable format, along with The Min Min Light’s second EP, Pre-Historia (released March, 2010). Pre-Historia was recorded in the Mt. William National Park and Florentine Valley at Lake Pedder in Tasmania.

The Min Min Lights debut performance was a live soundtrack set to a custom re-edit of Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan (1964), at Rainbow Serpent Festival 2009. TMML have also taken part in an unreleased documentary on unexplained light phenomena, directed by Danish film-maker Suvi Andrea Helminen.

The 3rd self-released EP Secret Sessions, re-recorded from studio out-takes in the Blue Mountains, NSW, was released on the 14th July, 2011.
